Jose R. Gonzalez
Reporter
Jose started at The Arizona Republic in July 2022 as a daily news reporter with a focus on communities of identity. Before then, he was a reporter at the Houston Chronicle from December 2017 and covered general assignments, business, law enforcement and public safety. Jose won multiple Texas Managing Editors awards, including first place in feature writing for his story on a gay bar facing closure after years of struggling in a hostile county. A Texas State University journalism graduate, Jose previously freelanced for the Chronicle and covered the U.S. Congress for a couple of Washington, D.C. news outlets during separate internships. A Houston-area native, Jose briefly lived in rural Arizona as a small kid and still owns a serape bedcover and a San Marcos blanket his family purchased on weekend excursions to the southern border.
